3 Reasons Why People Like Centerless Grinding

For maintaining accuracy, achieving close tolerances and meeting high production volumes, a centerless grinder is a workhorse machine tool that can’t be beat.  When operated and maintained properly, your centerless grinder will be the Triple Crown winner of your production line.  Fast, reliable and hard-working, here are just a few reasons why we’re so keen on centerless grinders.  Tell us what you like about your centerless grinding machine.

1.  Speed

For high production volumes, a centerless grinder will run laps around a cylindrical grinder each and every time.  And because centerless grinding does not require that parts be held in place, a centerless grinder will also zip past its chucker- and center-type grinder counterparts.   A safe bet:  Put your money on the centerless grinder when production is key.

2.  Improved roundness

Working in tandem, your centerless grinder’s work blade, grinding wheel and regulating wheel make your out-of-round part round.  How does a centerless grinder work?  In layman’s terms, a centerless grinder is composed of a machine base, a grinding wheel, a regulating wheel and a work blade.  Centerless grinders remove material from the outside diameter of a work piece using an abrasive wheel.  Instead of being fixtured in place, the workpiece is located on its outside diameter and is supported by the centerless grinder’s work blade, which is positioned between the regulating wheel and the grinding wheel.  The regulating wheel drives the part into the machine where the grinding wheel removes the material.

3.  The ability to grind very small parts

Centerless grinding eliminates the need to locate parts between fixtures, allowing you to process parts with diameters as small as 0.02mm.
