10 Things Your Boss Expects You to Know About Solving Centerless Grinder Errors – Part One

Centerless grinders are the dependable workhorses of the manufacturing world.  With regular maintenance and TLC, your centerless grinding machine will produce zillions of parts with nary a hiccup. But when your Triple Crown-winning grinder suddenly develops a limp, as shown by parts coming off the machine, you’ll want to be savvy enough to have a potential diagnosis before you report the problem to your all-knowing boss.  Here’s one big hint:  Centerless grinding machine problems are generally related to the grinder’s tooling. You’d be wise to focus on that aspect when troubleshooting your machine.  Below are some common grinding machine problems, their causes, and clues to possible solutions.

Centerless Grinding Machine Error #1:  Burn marks on the workpiece

Possible causes:

1.     Insufficient coolant

2.     Wheel too hard

3.     Too heavy stock removal

Centerless Grinding Machine Error #2:  Chatter

Possible causes:

1.     Blade not properly clamped

2.     Outside “floor harmonics”

3.     Wheel out of balance

Possible causes:

1.     Gibs not properly adjusted on upper and lower slides

3.     Work improperly rough ground
